Classical Singer in Her 90’s Takes to Reiki

One of my hospice patients was a lively woman classically trained as a singer, and her resume included being a college tennis ace. She sang with a Seattle chorus for 40 years. She was quite curious about Reiki and asked questions like, “what does the word mean, where does it come from and where did you learn it?” As the treatment began to unfold she closed her eyes, her facial muscles relaxed and her breathing softened and slowed. She settled into a deep snooze and was still dozing peacefully at the treatment’s end. Her daughter, her primary caregiver, observed all this and stated how good it was to see her so relaxed, explaining that she often gets agitated when given physical care and is uncomfortable due to her current frail state. I was taken with this charming person, but my point in sharing is that all can benefit from Reiki, and that this woman is a reminder that we can be animated and curious no matter how frail and aged we may be.

There is a following of clients who consistently sign-up for each month’s clinic. We have a few staff members at the community center location who come for treatments and enthusiastically spread the word. One participant described her Reiki experience this way, “I always feel like I’m returning home. I feel gently cradled.”
